Does Drinking Water Lower Blood Sugar

“Stay Hydrated”

We have all heard the saying “stay hydrated at all times”. Although the health benefits of drinking water may be obvious, the real question that lies in front of us is “does drinking water lower blood sugar?”  Essentially, drinking a lot of water is beneficial as it works to reduce insulin resistance, which in turn leads to less hunger. Studies show that the recommended 8 glasses of water a day are proven to lower blood sugars.

Why Does Water Work?

The more water you drink, the less hungry you are, the less you eat during the day. If your blood sugars are extremely high and your kidney fails to process the sugar, water will eliminate excess sugar out of your system. For diabetic patients, water is especially vital to eliminate excess ketones from the bloodstream and to stay hydrated at all times.

Drink Too Much Water?

“Drinking extra water will not dilute your blood sugar levels if you are already fully hydrated. However, being dehydrated can cause blood sugars to concentrate and subsequently rise. Dehydration can worsen diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS). In general, it’s a good idea to have at least 64 ounces of water daily, unless you are instructed to follow a fluid restriction from your doctor. This 64-ounce fluid recommendation can increase due to activity levels, time of year and personal preference.” – Sky Ridge Medical Center

Recommended Amount of Water

  • Women:  Eight 200ml glasses per day
  • Men: Ten 200ml glasses per day

Water Schedule:

The best way to ensure proper hydrations is by following a set time schedule. A glass of water every hour can be useful. Either way, water intake is one of the most essential components of effectively lowering blood sugar.
